Know your skin type first

The Fitzpatrick scale runs from type I, which always burns and never tans, to type VI, which rarely burns. Types I and II are generally advised against UV tanning altogether. Every first visit with us begins with a consultation to establish your type before any session is booked.

Sensible session lengths

• First session: three minutes for almost everyone, regardless of type.
• Sessions two and three: three to six minutes, only if there was no redness at all afterwards.
• Maintenance: six to nine minutes once a base tan is established.
• Always leave a minimum of 24 hours, ideally 48, between sessions.

The UK rules

Under the Sunbeds (Regulation) Act 2010 it is illegal for anyone under 18 to use a sunbed in a commercial salon, and salons must supply protective eyewear and health information. Sunbeds in the UK are also limited to an equivalent UV output of 0.3 W/m². We ask for ID where there is any doubt.

When not to use a sunbed

• You are taking photosensitising medication — some antibiotics, retinoids, St John's wort and certain acne treatments.
• You have a history of skin cancer, or a family history of melanoma.
• You have many moles, freckling, or skin that always burns.
• You are pregnant, sunburnt, or your skin is broken or irritated.

Protecting yourself in the cabin

• Wear the goggles supplied. Closed eyelids do not block UV.
• Remove make-up, perfume and any product not intended for UV exposure.
• Cover previously untanned or sensitive areas, and never combine a sunbed session with sunbathing on the same day.
• Moisturise afterwards — hydrated skin holds colour longer and looks less dry.

If you would rather avoid UV

Spray tanning gives comparable colour with no UV exposure whatsoever, and can be done the same day. It is the option we recommend for lighter phototypes.
